Elementary Gun Safety Rules
- Never point a gun at anything you don't want to shoot; control the direction the muzzle is pointing.
- Handle every gun as if it were loaded and cocked.
- When picking up a gun or accepting one from another person, always open the action and make sure it is unloaded.
- Before handing a gun to another person, open the action and make sure it is not loaded.
- Be sure of your target before you shoot.
- Make sure you have an adequate backstop. ALL ammunition is dangerous at ranges in excess of one mile.
- Use only ammunition of the correct caliber, size and bullet shape.
- Avoid ricochets by never shooting at water or any hard, flat surface.
- Unload your gun before climbing or jumping over a fence or other obstacle.
- Never climb into or out of a tree or tree stand with a loaded gun.
- Never pull a gun toward you by the muzzle.
- Do not consume alcoholic beverages before and during shooting.
- Keep the barrel and mechanism clear of obstructions.
- Unload all guns when you are finished shooting.
- Protect guns and ammunition from unsupervised access by children.
